Daimler Vans is recalling certain model year 2015-2016 Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner Sprinter 2500 and 3500 vehicles saying the windows could separate during a crash. Volvo is also issuing a recall for certain model year 2016 XC90 vehicles due to a potential sunroof issue.
The Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner Sprinter 2500 and 3500 vehicles were manufactured April 1, 2015 to October 31, 2015.
Due to the chemical composition of multiple layers of paint, the adhesion between the top layer and chassis could separate, according to Daimler Vans.
“In the event of a crash of significant severity, high forces may act on the windows which are bonded to the paint,” according to a statement on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) website. “Should this occur, it cannot be ruled out that the windows may peel away.”
The lack of adhesiveness is due to an issue in paint production at the paint supplier, according to the automaker.
The company will check the paint and remove the windows and lashing system (if equipped), renew the paint and re-install the windows.
The Volvo recall involves the sunroof. These vehicles were manufactured from January 27, 2015 to April 23, 2016.
The sunroofs on the vehicles may have a switch that can be unintentionally pressed. They fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 118, Power-Operated Window, Partition and Roof Panel Systems.
If the sunroof is unintentionally closed, it could increase the risk of injury, according to the automaker.
Volvo plans a software upgrade for the affected vehicles that will disable the auto-close function of the sunroof. At the start of 2017 model-year production, the issue was corrected.
